App SI@unipv
The digital tool SI@unipv concretely puts into operation an innovative, sustainable and economic digital technology within the courtyards of the medieval main building of the University of Pavia (so called ‘Palazzo Centrale’) to target actual demands of persons with disabilities in the first place, while offering different advantages to the entire community at the same time.
SI@unipv was born as a pilot project – developed only in its basic functionalities under another research project fully-curiosity driven, called BIDS (Building an Inclusive Digital Society) funded by the University of Pavia (under the “Blue Sky Research” call, running from 2017 to 2019).
As an outcome of the RISID project (funded by Fondazione Cariplo), the original functionalities of the app have been further implemented using accessible digital technology, being realized by accessibility experts in order to tackle the needs of multiple actors that have been detected and scrutinised by the research group members.
The SI@unipv app has thus become a useful instrument for the autonomous orientation, not only of persons with visual impairment, but also of persons with other kind of disabilities. In this vein, for example, SI@unipv permits to choose paths which are accessible in wheelchair and provides information on the physical accessibility of classrooms and other points of interest in the main building of the University of Pavia, allowing a direct contact with the dedicated service of the University (so called ‘SAISD’).
That is why SI@unipv is a tool of general interest for the entire community, providing helpful indications not only for autonomous physical orientation in Palazzo Centrale, but also to get up-to-date information on the University’s services and events.
Moreover, for occasional visitors or curious students, the application offers thematic touristic tours within the main University’s building.
